A day filled with chocolate, cheese, and castles? You cannot tell me that isn’t everyone’s ideal dream day. If you’re like me, then a day trip to Broc, Switzerland with a detour to Gruyeres is all you need.
Chocolate Galore!
Your first spot is going to be Maison Cailler where you will find the elaborate history of Swiss chocolate-making. Cailler being the oldest chocolate brand in the country and loved by all chocolate enthusiasts since 1819. This factory leads you through an immersive journey while tasting each treat.
You will be given a multi-sensory experience with headphones to enjoy learning through a series of rooms. Once that is complete, you will find chocolate tastings, interactive displays, and even be able to watch the staff in action while they make the delicious treats.
Maybe after you will enjoy a hot chocolate at their cafe or buy all the chocolate your heart desires in the shop!

Savory Delights
Your next stop is La Maison du Gruyère! While Switzerland is renowned for its chocolate heritage, it is also important to not overlook the world of Swiss cheese. This cheese museum with give guests an immersive experience into the art of cheese-making, specifically the Gruyère AOP cheese.
Along with witnessing live cheese-making, this museum offers exhibitions that show the history, culture, and techniques behind cheese production. While learning you will have the opportunity to try cheeses in various stages of age.
After your tour, you can indulge on delicious fondue at the on-site restaurant. Make sure to get a reservation as it does fill up quickly. Not to worry though! The local town has plenty of option to try the famous Swiss dish.

Lunch Break
Though you have been indulging in lots of tasty treats, it may be best to head to the town of Gruyères to get some food. Fondue is a delicacy in this country and many places along the cobblestone streets have it! I went to a beautiful restaurant in the outdoor seating area. A friend joined me on this trip, so we shared a fondue for two. I recommend getting both bread and potatoes!
If you can’t stop for a fondue trip, try grabbing some at La Maison du Gruyère shop so you can make it at home!

Princess Dreams

Now for my favorite part of the whole trip – all because I could live out my princess dreams – Château de Gruyères. This castle is built on a hill overlooking the town of Gruyères. It was built between 1270 and 1282 and resided the Counts of Gruyères until 1554.
Here you will find medieval architecture with fortified walls, towers, and a beautiful garden. Guests can explore each room filled with the time periods furnishings, tapestries, and artwork that symbolizes the region’s history.
When you visit, make sure you follow the trails to get a panaramic view of the town. I went on a day that was foggy and it still looks breathtaking, I could not imagine what it would look like on a perfect sunny day.
December Travel
My friend and I went on this one-day getaway in the middle of December, and luckily, there was a beautiful Christmas market right in the middle of town. They were selling all sorts of wonderful things and I even got to write my name with a quill and ink – truly lived out a medieval lifestyle.
Though the weather was a bit frustrating during this time because of the fog and rain, it was still beautiful, but I will let you decide when you want to do this adventure!
